The cast of players is small, but it could be argued that they have made the programme what it is. While there are a good many minor characters in the show, only the regular players, collectively known as the Resident Lunatics, feature here.

Colleen - the star. Self-confessed geek and pervert, her enthusiasm and cheerful acceptance of life and its lunacy contribute to her je-ne-sais-quoi star quality. Her occasional segues into rebellion, elvish fantasies and dentistry notwithstanding, she remains a lovable and eccentric central character.

Enid - the guru. Solemn, brooding arbitrator of All That Is Cool, she is the show's real rebel and maverick. A much-pierced, heavy-metal fan with an unexpected interest in classical literature, she is the most variable and unpredictable of all the characters.

Iona - the watcher. A librarian without a cause, her most significant role remains to observe, and her diaries provide an alternative chronicle of events. Nocturnal to the point of obsession, her reliability is compromised by her ability to remain lucid whilst unconscious.

Hannah - the drama queen. A purple-and-rainbow-clad avenging angel, she is a slightly unearthly arts student with a penchant for Shakespeare and the dramatic talents to match. Bright and cheerful, she gives what might have been a somewhat sepia-toned show its colour and sparkle.

Emily - the token straight person. Perfectionist and mathematician, her mental outlook is somewhat different to that of the other Resident Lunatics and can cause fireworks, but it is obvious that she stands between the others and the sin of complacency.

Clare - the dysfunctional one. A quirky, occasionally maudlin insomniac, she owns a feline Satanic incarnation and a goldfish named Elvis. Generally the quietest of the six, but she has often proved herself loyal to a fault and is well-loved by all.
