As might have been expected from a cult show, the fandom is close-knit and obsessive. Their main medium of expression is fanfiction, which generally divides into two categories, slash and het, the former being far more prevalent. The singular lack of gen fic for the show remains a mystery.

Some common ships:

Clare/Emily - universally known as "Clemily." Generally considered as nearly canon, the ambiguity of the relationship allows a great deal of speculation. Their similarities and differences almost appear to balance out, and even the other characters have a tendency to ship them together.

Colleen/Clare - until lately, a minority ship. Still fairly uncommon, but the case for it has been strengthened by Blue Moon Party (see episode guide) when a moment offscreen may or may not have taken it beyond the platonic.

As of August 2004, all that changes. Colleen/Clare comes out of the left field to now become the one and only the canon ship. Events that mostly occurred off-screen have firmly established this one in the "yes, it's true" category.

Hannah/Enid - also known as HannahandEnid, the "cute" ship. Much sharing of beds and falling asleep in each other's arms contributes to the canon plausibility of this ship, as does the obvious affection between the two characters. Probably the most popular ship apart from Clemily.

Hannah/Iona - another ship strengthened by an occurrence at the Blue Moon Party, but with a certain amount of canonical interaction even before that. Well-known for "wibbling" at each other, they also share an affection that could become something more.

For obvious reasons, all het ships involve minor characters as one half of the pairing, and only one deserves a mention:

Colleen/Simon - unlikely to happen in canon for obvious reasons; shippers cite a shared love of historical recreationism as catalyst for romance.

Both Hannah and Iona have and have had boyfriends; they will not be discussed here.
